    Looking From A Window.

He looks from the train onto the landscape wondering if it has been written before. Pylons and cables. Will this be a hot summer: spring is beginning to snap? Listening to all the voices and all the phones and all the ring tones wishing for silence. The crane. The dockyard. The water.

    Evening On The Beach.

Co-axle on this early evening the sun and the moon hold balance in the pale blue summer sky. Broken as a white gleaming high-tech motor yacht breaches the water heading towards the green protruding Mew Stone. The Breakwater remains silent and still. ‘Jolene, Jolene, please don’t take him just because you can.’ She came home to her mother that night. The water cresses the greyness of a man-o-war resting at anchor as birdsong laps over the pebbles on the beach. Early evening turns towards eight.

    Mojo's, Torquay

    Anyone can sniff at Mojo's
With it's myth of orchestra now departed
    To the retirement homes,
Sheet music abandoned, faded in weak sunlight.

Mojo's is also a myth, a dread hole
Of timeshare salesmen and BMW man,
Of aspiring dancers hoping for auditions, a place
Of lager not beer, of shots, of drug consumption.

They don't let their regrets go public at Mojo's,
The holidaymakers have moved on to the retirement homes,
The tourist industry officials despair; our lovely
Curvey hotel has gone downmarket and oik.

    Dartmouth, Dartmouth,

    a friend to me,

    a castle of safety,

    a sea to be free.

    A view to inspire,

    a breath of fresh air,

    a cuddle inside

with a cream tea to share.

    To walk the fine coastline,

    to ride that great train,

    to talk with the Mermaid,

    to hide from the rain.

    To shout at the seagulls,

    to laugh on the ferry,

    oh, sail back to Dartmouth

    and throw out your telly.

    Dartmouth, Dartmouth,

    I long to be near,

    a beautiful lady,

    and friends of good cheer.

The sea it did bring me,

    and it took me away,

    but I long for Dartmouth

    and one day I'll stay.
