Bagga Tor, Near Peter Tavy

22nd February 2012 08:38:01

Unlike many Tors on Dartmoor, this one is within easy reach of the car.  However, it involves a lot of map reading to reach it!  We drove through Tavistock and headed for Peter Tavy, then towards Cudlipptown where the road becomes increasingly narrower until you pass the entrance to Brousentor Farm and the road ends with a gate.  Park the car here, and Bagga Tor is straight ahead.

On reaching the top of Bagga Tor, the view stretches before you.  Lynch Tor in the distance one way and Standon Hill on the other, with the South Common Plantation and the valley in between. and on the other side, Nat Tor and Ger Tor.

A sharp icy wind whipped around us, so with our heads down, we marched up to Lynch Tor.  The view was worth it. On a clear day you can see for miles in all directions.

The route we chose across to Standon Hill proved to be very tricky, with clumps of grass over marshland the higher we went. Not to be recommended!  Eventually we ate our lunch under the protection of the buildings on the Hill, although what other use they have, we didn’t discover.

This walk is close to a campsite Harford Bridge Park, Peter Tavy, Nr Tavistock where you can enjoy a true Dartmoor holiday by the River Tavy ( www.harfordbridge.co.uk)

If you would like to walk on Dartmoor, but do not have the confidence to go it alone, then why not book a guided walk through the newly formed Moorland Guides.

www.moorlandguides.co.uk   Their open day is on Tuesday 3rd April and they will be leading two hour guided walks all day long from 10am onwards with a variety of guides looking at the Bellever antiquities. The fees for the walks will be donated to the Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team from Ashburton, who will also be in attendance at the day. Come along and meet the guides at Postbridge by the National Park Information Centre at Princetown
